China Merchants Jinling launches another Swedish LNG-powered tanker. December 10, 2020. Swedish integrated shipping company Furetank on Thursday (21 January) announced the delivery of the dual-fuelled Fure Vinga from the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) Dingheng Co Ltd.The vessel will run on liquefied biogas (LBG) and liquified natural gas (LNG). FURE VEN, a dual-fuel vessel owned and operated by Furetank of Donsö, Sweden, a global leader in the development of efficient and environmentally friendly product & chemical tankers, has become the first non-U.S. flagged vessel to bunker LNG in a U.S. port. Eagle LNG Partners, a pioneer in small-scale LNG and an LNG bunker supplier, is the first company to deliver LNG bunker fuel to a foreign flagged vessel. Furetank, which is noted to have undertaken the process of retrofitting the tanker Fure West for LNG propulsion in 2015, is said to have ordered four LNG-fuelled newbuildings along with its partners in the Gothenburg -based Gothia Tanker Alliance, Besides Furetank that took delivery of four of these ships, the other owners include Alvtank and Thun Tankers.

Alvtank received the sixth ship out of this batch back in September 2019. The medium-sized tankers feature LNG propulsion and battery backup as well. Each of the FKAB-designed ice class ships is 149 meters long and 22.8 meters wide.

LNG reduces CO2 emissions by at least 20 percent. As a fuel, LNG is interchangeable with renewable LBG (liquefied biogas), as they both consist mainly of methane. This means that the two gases can be mixed. Using both LNG and LBG is one of the concrete actions that will take us towards a low-carbon society of the future. Furetank has been using LNG as fuel since 2015 when the FURE WEST was converted for dual-fuel.
